Breitbart News has learned that an unnamed “white nationalist” has reportedly gone into hiding after a failed bid to “take down” the U.S. National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial, both located in Washington, D.C.
According to Breitbart News, “a white nationalist” is now being sought by law enforcement in Virginia who was “attempting to take out the monuments” by the end of the month.
The white nationalist, who Breitbart News was unable to confirm has any affiliation with the alt-right, is currently hiding in his home state.
“The man’s intent is to go to court and get the monuments taken down,” a law enforcement source told Breitbart News.
“He believes his case is the most likely to succeed.
But he needs to do this.
It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter when.
He needs to take this action now, before the monuments are taken down.”
The sources told Breitbart that the “white supremacist” is not a member of any organization, and is not currently associated with any groups, though he “does have a Facebook page with a picture of him holding a Confederate flag and an image of him at a rally with neo-Nazis in July 2016.”
The law enforcement sources explained that the individual is known to law enforcement for his “aggressive and hateful behavior” and his attempts to “create a climate of fear and fear of the white race” in the United States.
“His plans to use violence are becoming more and more likely, and we believe his intention is to take action at the end.
He has attempted to use firearms and knives to try and intimidate law enforcement officers,” the law enforcement official told Breitbart.
The sources said that the man was a “former member of the Ku Klux Klan” and was convicted of a hate crime in the state of Virginia in 2014.
“His history of racist and xenophobic rhetoric and statements are well documented,” the sources explained.
“We believe this is the man behind the attempted vandalism and we are currently pursuing all options to ensure that this individual is brought to justice.”
The White House has repeatedly condemned the white supremacist’s actions and said that anyone who attempts to take “their” monuments down should be arrested and prosecuted.
“It is clear that the White House is outraged by the violent actions of a man who, at the urging of neo-Nazi groups, has already threatened to kill police officers and federal agents, and who has been caught on camera using a Nazi salute,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Our goal is not just to protect our nation’s landmarks and symbols of our nation, but to ensure our nation is a place where all people of all races, religions and backgrounds can peacefully exercise their free speech rights and engage in civil dialogue.”
In February, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump also denounced the white nationalist in a public statement, saying that “anyone who is willing to do harm to America and its great monuments is a danger to all of us, and all Americans must join forces to stop them.”
“Any person who would use violence or threaten violence to remove a memorial to the heroes who fought to protect us and who gave their lives to keep us free will not be welcomed in America,” the statement read.
